Université de Liège

The Centre d’Etudes de l’Ethnicité et des Migrations (Centre for Ethnic and Migration Studies) of the University of Liège was created in 1995 and is directed by Marco Martiniello. The Centre d’Etudes de l’Ethnicité et des Migrations is an interfaculty centre with the aim to carry out theoretical and empirical research in the fields of human migration, ethnic relations and racism. It aims to create a forum of information and reflection to stimulate research concerning important dimensions such as cultural identity and social dynamics as well as relations with politics. Through seminars and academic meetings, the Centre d’Etudes de l’Ethnicité et des Migrations also aims at stimulating the debate around the different aspects of migration and ethnic minorities. The ULg carries out a program of research on migration, ethnic relations and related topics that is divided into the three following priority research areas: (a) the governance of cultural diversity and urban social cohesion; (b) citizenship, identities, political and social movements and (c) migration, transnationalism and globalisation. From its creation, the Centre d’Etudes de l’Ethnicité et des Migrations has built up a wide network among international institutions. The ULg is a member of the European network of Excellence IMISCOE (International Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion). It has relations with IMES, (Metropolis, TIRES), ERCOMER (MigCities), INED, COMPAS (MOST), CEG, SociNova and CES (Metropolis). ULg is a partner in the sub-group “Migration, Multiculturality and Ethnic Conflicts” in the thematic network in humanitarian development studies: HUMANITARIAN NET. In this framework, the ULg participates with the European Doctoral Program in Migration, Diversity and Identities funded by the European Commission with 10 other European universities. The centre is also a member of TIRES which is a consortium of 8 US and European Universities. TIRES aims to promote teaching and research on “Transnational- ism, International migration, Race, Ethnocentrism and the State”. Furthermore, the ULg has participated to the MOST (Management of Social Transformation) program funded by UNESCO. The ULg has also developed links with Unversities in Eastern and Southern Europe, North America and in Australia.
