University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE), Institute for Development and Peace (INEF)
The INEF is an institute of the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) with a strong focus on policy-related and relevant research. The institute centres all its research activities around three central fields: (1) Global Governance and Human Security; (2) violent conflicts and strategies of peace building and (3) development and human rights. It closely collaborates with the Development and Peace Foundation (SEF). UDE has been working extensively on aspects of state fragility and state-building, conflict prevention, and global governance for years and is also actively involved (advisory board) in the German government’s action plan “Civilian Crisis Prevention, Conflict Resolution and Post-Conflict Peace-Building”. Another fundamental research domain of the institute is the relationship of political identities (ethnic, national, religious) to regional conflict dynamics. INEF has cooperated with NAVEND on topics of migration with regard to Turkish and Kurdish migrants. Its outstanding profile in research is illustrated by the regular publication ofthe “INEF Report”, the“INEF Policy Brief Series”, the well-known biennial edited volume “Global Trends” and the annual edited volume “Friedensgutachten” (“Peace Report”); in collaboration with four other German peace research institutes. The institute also provides rich thematic and regional expertise, focused on Africa and the Middle East. It draws, among others, from various research projects such as “State Failure and Local Governance in Afghanistan” (financed by the German Foundation for Peace Research/DSF), “Beyond Managing the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Toward a New People-to-People Agenda” (USIP). Under the lead of Jochen Hippler, the INEF will supervise the case study in Berlin and work on conflict policies.
